THE BURGH LE MARSH GROUP OF PARISHES.

The Burgh Group of parishes consists of 6 communities centred around Burgh-le-Marsh. Burgh is the largest community with just over 2000 people, while Gunby is the smallest with a population of just 27! The other four villages, Bratoft, Irby in the Marsh, Orby & Welton le Marsh vary from between 120- 250 people in each.

 

It was in 1970 that the six parishes were put together with the parish priest living at Burgh.

9.30am   Sung Eucharist (Not 5 th Sundays)

6.00pm   Sung Evensong (Book of Common Prayer)

  1 st Wednesday in month:   2.00pm Little Angels (A short service for pre-school children and adults)

2 nd Wednesday in month   2.00pm Mothers' Union

Every Thursday     9.00am Eucharist

 

Of course all six communities have their own church which still play a large part in the community, often being the only public building left, with the loss of shops, schools, post offices etc. They are all different in appearance and style and part from Gunby and Irby, the other four are open daily and visitors are very welcome.

 

All six churches have their churchyards still open, and many of our registers of baptisms, marriages and burials go back to the 16 th century, but these registers are now kept in the archives at Lincoln . Their address is:

On a fifth Sunday of the month a Group Eucharist takes place in one of the 5 smaller Churches at 9.30am. Please ring Fr Terry to find out venue.

Father Terry is usually accompanied by his beagle Jack, who after 4 or 5 services every Sunday is soon ready for bed after Evensong!
